Chapter 18

Sydney smiled as she scanned the small mom-and-pop restaurant. Jane’s Mindful Diner seemed to encompass everything good about Zen. As soon as she entered, she saw a large plaque with the words, Live, Laugh, Love. While it may seem cliché, it struck the right chord with her.

“Wyatt, we’ve got your booth ready for you,” the hostess said the moment they walked in. He waved and thanked her. They followed her, and the girls scrambled in on one side. That left her to sit next to Wyatt. She pretended not to notice how close he was.

“Reagan,” she asked as she handed out menus, “how’s school going?”

“Great, Miss Jane, this is Madison, my new best friend. Remember I told you about her?”

She took in the whole atmosphere. From the coffee cup poster above the booth to the fact Wyatt had a personal spot. It was quite a change from any restaurant she had visited in Cleveland.

“Of course I remember.” Did she just wink at Wyatt? She certainly was pretty—and young. Young to own a restaurant.

“You must be Madison’s mom,” Miss Jane said. “Nice to meet you.”

She nodded, then laughed. “I’m Sydney, but you can call me Madison’s mom. Everyone else does.”

“You might not be so pleased with that when I call you that at the office.” Wyatt nudged her. Damn him.

The girls had finished their burgers and fries. They were finishing up their milkshakes. She and Wyatt had just gotten a coffee refill.

“There’s the video game I told you about.” Reagan elbowed Madison.

“Dad, can we?” She nodded toward the machine.

“See,” Wyatt said, as he tapped her forearm, “this is what happens every time we come here.”

He turned his attention back to his daughter. “I think you girls need to ask Ms. Thomas if Madison’s allowed.”

“Can I, Mom? Please?” The girls bounced on the bench.

“I suppose. Do you need quarters?”

“No.” Miss Jane had just walked up with the check. “I disabled the pay portion years ago. I figured it keeps the children busy while the parents are talking and enjoying their second cup of coffee.” Wyatt nodded and held up his mug.

“Go. Have fun.” She waved Madison off. As they ran off, she said, “Just behave.”

Miss Jane looked toward the girls. “They’re busy now…Wyatt, can I ask you a favor?” Her voice was nearly a whisper.

“Sure, what do you need?”

She glanced at Sydney. “I can leave. It’s okay.” She tapped Wyatt on the shoulder to let her out. Sparks flew through her arm. Damn him.

He shook his head. “What’s this about?”

Miss Jane blushed. “Jelly beans.” The words came out as a whimper. He motioned for her to sit down.

“You’re having love problems?” He leaned back as if he were assessing the situation.

Does she want them to cast a spell on Wyatt? Goosebumps flew up her arms. So what if she does? Why am I jealous? He’s my boss. Nothing more.

“I finally found him. I think he’s the one. But he doesn’t appear to notice me.” She paused and without being urged, continued. “His name is Roger.
